Tour Cost

€3,795 per person

Single supplement: €400

This 7-night itinerary explores the intriguing and endlessly fascinating island of Corsica. Turquoise seas, towering green pines and red granite rocks make this a landscape full of contradictions. We start in the colourful port of Bonifacio on the island’s southern tip before heading up the west coast to Piana and the beautiful Gulf of Porto. Our final stop is the former capital, Corte, an historic town lying at the geographical heart of the island and encircled by a backdrop of monumental granite mountains. With an age-old determination to keep their island pristine and unspoiled, the Corsicans have maintained an environment which offers a true paradise for hikers.

Surprising as it may seem, the easiest way to join this tour is to fly to Olbia in the north of Sardinia. Olbia is well served with flights from across Europe and the UK and the airport is just a 15 minute journey from the town itself. We will meet the group with our vans at the airport and a short ferry crossing brings us to Bonifacio on the southern tip of Corsica. The tour finishes in Bastia, at the airport or the ferry port.

What is included?

Comprehensive pre-trip information

Our tours are genuinely all-inclusive – learn more about what we offer.

Tour Highlights

Hike in the pristine scenery of Corsica’s granite landscape
Enjoy the island’s bounty – goat and sheep cheeses, cured meats, chestnuts and wild boar stews
Follow a section of the famous GR20 long distance route across the island

Walking / Terrain

There are 6 days of walking on the trip. Our first hike is an easy coastal path. After this we are hiking on rocky trails (mostly granite) and mountain tracks with significant ascents and descents (up to 800 metres on Days 5 and 6). The walking is rugged, so sturdy walking boots, with good ankle support, are essential. Walking poles are highly recommended, especially on steeper sections. Whilst the climate is generally good at this time of year, we are walking in the mountains so need to be prepared for changes in conditions.

Shortest/Longest Day: 5km/3.1 miles: 16km/9.9 miles

We have graded this hike a Level 4. Some of our tours are more challenging than others, so see how we grade our hikes to make sure you choose the right one for you. We climb 800 metres to a high ridge before descending back into the valley, perhaps dipping our toes in the water en route. There is no van access at lunchtime today, so both guides will hike in the picnic. After the hike, our drive to Corte takes us through magnificent red granite gorges and ancient pine forests. This is now part of the Mare a Mare long-distance hiking trail. We climb gently with increasingly spectacular views of the Tavignano Gorge to reach a series of rock pools where there is the opportunity for a refreshing dip before our picnic – which your guides have hiked in for you. We visit the town of Lovere on its north shore, one of the most beautiful villages in all of Italy. We finish in the high valleys of the Valtellina, close to the border with Switzerland, basing ourselves in the mountain town of Tirano. We taste fabulous Nebbiolo wines, visit churches and palaces and see UNESCO listed rock engravings. On our return to Bergamo, we make a stop at the celebrated Storico Ribelle cheesemakers. At the end of the tour guests have the option to continue their holiday on the awe-inspiring Bernina Express train from Tirano into Switzerland.

Visit UNESCO World Heritage sites throughout the region
Taste the wonderful wines of Franciacorta and the Valtellina
Private boat trip on Lake Iseo

Walking / Terrain

There are 6 days of walking on the trip. We walk on cobbled mule tracks, mountain trails, through vineyards (which can be muddy after rain) and along quiet tarmac roads. There are several steep ascents and descents, 600m-800m on most days, and a 1200m descent on the the final day, so a sound level of fitness is required. The mountain trails are rocky in places, and on Days 3,4 & 5 there is no van access at lunchtime. Since some of the walking is in the mountains it is important to be prepared for adverse weather conditions. Sturdy walking boots, with good grip and ankle support, are essential. Walking poles are highly recommended, especially on steeper sections.

Shortest day: 7km/4.3 miles / Longest day: 18km/11.2 miles

We have graded this hike a Level 4. Some of our tours are more challenging than others, so see how we grade our hikes to make sure you choose the right one for you. These cheeses, awarded a Slow Food presidia, are made from cow and goat milks following ancient traditions of summer alpine grazing. We enjoy a private visit and a tasting. We arrive back in Bergamo train station at 2 pm and Bergamo airport at 2:30 pm.

On the final day, guests who don’t wish to return to Bergamo will have other options:

Say farewell to the group in Tirano and take the spell-binding Bernina Express directly from Tirano into Switzerland. This is truly one of Europe’s most spectacular train journeys, as the track snakes its way past alpine gorges, glaciers, and crosses over monumental viaducts. The journey to St. Moritz takes approximately 2.5 hours, or it is possible to continue on to Chur, or connect to other Swiss cities. It is easy to do the return to St. Moritz as a day trip. It is also possible to exit the Bernina Express at one of its alpine stops along the route and book to stay for a spectacular night or two in this panoramic scenery. Contact Cristina Giudici at info@treninorosso.it for itineraries and bookings.

Join the visit to Storico Ribelle and then take a train from Morbegno back to Tirano and make the journey on the Bernina Express the following day. Morbegno is on the Milan-Tirano train line.

Tour Cost

This 8-night walking holiday starts and finishes in the Eternal City and follows in the footsteps of the Etruscans – an ancient civilisation which populated the centre of Italy long before the Romans. We visit UNESCO World Heritage tombs, walk along sunken Etruscan roads and explore the outstanding towns of Civita di Bagnoregio and Orvieto which were both important Etruscan settlements. Our hikes take us through the rolling landscape of central Italy, with its olive groves, cypresses and vineyards as well as to the tranquil waters of Lake Vico and Lake Bolsena. We finish in the Val d’Orcia, a strikingly beautiful valley in the southern part of Tuscany and home to some of Italy’s most celebrated wines.

This tour starts and finishes in Rome, and our pick-up and drop-off point is Rome’s Fiumicino airport. People might choose to extend their walking holiday in Italy by spending more time there or by visiting Milan, Venice, Florence or Siena. For more ideas on where to go visit our City Guide page.

Visit UNESCO World Heritage sites throughout the region
Taste the noble wines of Montepulciano and Montalcino
Follow sections of the historic Via Francigena pilgrim route to Rome

Walking / Terrain

There are 6 days of walking on the trip. We usually walk on strade bianche (gravel roads), woodland tracks and through farmland. This area of central Italy is relatively hilly, with some significant ups and downs, but not mountainous. The walking is fairly rugged in sections so sturdy walking boots, with good ankle support, are required. Walking poles would be an advantage, especially on steeper sections. There is van access at lunchtimes on all days of this tour so you can choose to walk a shorter day if required.

Shortest/Longest Day: 9.8km/6 miles: 16.5km/10.2 miles

We have graded this hike a Level 3. Some of our tours are more challenging than others, so see how we grade our hikes to make sure you choose the right one for you.
